It's important to me that my children have good manners and understand the meaning behind the manners - that they are not just "going through the motions." Before play dates we often review our manners to try to ensure everyone has a pleasant time.
Always ask before you hit or tackle someone.
If you can't share a toy, put it away before your guests arrive.
Put your pants back on after you go to the potty.
You may spit in the trash can, potty or outside, but not on your friends.
I've tried to help him understand the concept of what it means to host a guest. We follow the rules mentioned above because someone has honored us with a visit. We want them to feel welcomed, comfortable, and to come again. We want to do what they want to do. Parker sometimes struggles with this, but he's getting better.
The other day, he was watching his morning cartoon, Handy Manny. Maddie was in the next room and wanted to listen to music. I turned it on low, but soon, Parker was at my side.
Parker: Turn it off!
Me: Why?
Parker : I want to hear Manny!
Me: It's not that loud.
Parker: I can't concentrate on my show!
Me: (calmly, but frankly a little annoyed) You can still watch your show.
Long pause. Wheels turning.
Parker: I'm your guest, okay? Can I be your guest?
Sharp little guy.
